We have many stories like this of how significant relationship breakthroughs with couples dealing with serious relationship challenges have happened using the step by step design process we discovered in living and authoring, THE PROGRAM.

But first, there’s one story in particular we’d like to share with you… our story.

Unlike other relationship experts who speak from academic theory and “clinical” experience, for us saving marriages is very personal because we lost ours and fought hard to get it back.

Love caught us by surprise. We met on a bitter January night in 1997, warmed by the nearby fireplace at the Full Moon Café and an instant spark of attraction.

It was the last thing either of us expected, yet the magic was undeniable. We were, by all accounts, a model couple.

Both well educated, successful, and upwardly mobile. Jay, a trained psychologist and C-suite executive coach to the corporate elite; Julie, a former Miss Oklahoma semi-finalist, model, and entertainer at Disney World. It was a fairytale courtship beyond what either of us ever expected; a true love affair we thought nothing could ever take away.

We were wrong…

By December of that year, we exchanged wedding vows. Then something happened that destroys most marriages. By September, ten years later, those vows would end in the aftermath of a devastating affair, a cancer diagnosis and a painful divorce bringing the fairytale to an abrupt end.

Three children and a decade of marriage later, the fairytale was gone. On the outside, the scene was still storybook. Success rewarded our family with a gorgeous home, comfortable lifestyle, and exotic vacations. Jay traveled the country as his businesses boomed. Julie became a full-time stay-at-home mother to our three small children.

Ironically, the more “success” we achieved the less successful life became. Maybe you know something about that in your relationship too. By all appearances, we had it all. Behind the storybook facade, however, the foundation of our marriage had cracked. The magic that drew us together was a casualty of the lifestyle we created and now had to support.

Jay entered into a clandestine affair, separating himself emotionally from the family. When the affair was finally revealed, both Jay and Julie had to face the ugly reality of infidelity. What started as a beautiful romance ended in tremendous pain. We separated; shortly afterward Julie was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Divorce and a broken home followed.

But the love that started in that Full Moon Café in 1997 was about to surprise us both. Through the often contentious, divisive process of divorce, we met each other in brazen honesty.

In fact, the questions THE PROGRAM will ask you come from hours of intense healing conversations we spent over two years having!

It was in the midst of ‘who kept the house and the couch, who got the art collection and dinnerware, who had primary custody of the children, that our friendship - long lost and very damaged - began to re-emerge. Beneath the ashes of our burnt lives the seed of a deeper love never before experienced was birthed.

With the future of our family at stake, could we find another option to separate lives? Maybe you are asking yourself similar questions?

Jay’s first step was to take complete responsibility for his decision to engage in an affair and its impact on Julie. We then committed ourselves wholeheartedly to growing as individuals first, and then as a couple chose to learn from our mistakes rather than blame each other for them.

The decision to be transparent, tell the truth no matter what and be accountable for how we failed one another in our marriage was the beginning of healing. Although we couldn’t salvage our former marriage we could DESIGN a new one, based on learning how we failed one another, so that it could not only thrive, but be better than before.

Our desire to invent a new future, one informed by the lessons of the past trauma but not defined by it, created a sense of possibility and hope. We were at last willing to be “Surprised by Love”. With a lot of work and commitment, we healed and transformed our scarred relationship with love.

The fairytale returned. In the shadow of the Magic Kingdom, on a tranquil lake surrounded by our children, we once more exchanged marriage vows. This time, however, the weaknesses in our marriage were now strengths, our needs were now fulfilled, our hopes now realized.
